Discipline Determination Dreams: A Mentorship Program for Students
Wednesday July 17, 2024 10:10am - 12:00pm CDT
The objective of this session is to generate awareness and interest for a student mentorship group we started called D3 (Discipline, Determination, Dreams). The group is designed to help middle school students develop a sense of community and belonging while being challenged in their integrity, accountability, respect, leadership and service to better and improve not only their school but their community. Through our program, we have dramatically increased student GPA and greatly decreased the number of office referrals and discipline (ISS/OSS) received by students. We are completing our fourth year. We started with 15 students and have grown to over 150 students. Not only do we want to bring awareness and generate interest in our group, we also want to give participants a blueprint on how to start and run their own mentorship program on their campuses.

Wednesday July 17, 2024 11:10am - 12:00pm CDT
As an educator we understand the importance of data collection, however, what data are you collecting on the students that have modifications and accommodations? What is your current process for providing documentation of how frequently a student is being provided and using the accommodations set forth in their IEP? Have you ever questioned what specific accommodations look like in the classroom? This session will help you better understand the students' accommodations and how to accurately document when and how those accommodations or modulations are being used.  Together we can discuss and collaborate on how to encourage progress for students in your classroom using appropriate accommodations and data collections.

Arisa Health: When Helper's Code: Vicarious Trauma and What Do We Do With It
Wednesday July 17, 2024 11:10am - 12:00pm CDT
We've all been there. We just are not sure that we can face another day in the classroom hearing the stories of how our students and families face horrendous circumstances - much less see how those circumstances impact our students' academic and social functioning. Even more so, we are then expected to go home and fulfill all our personal roles well. This is just a glimpse into the daily life of an Educator. Educators and Administrators work with students and families that they are not only tasked with teaching, but also walking through life with. It is easy and desired to hold all the good that comes from these relationships, but it is difficult, and sometimes unhealthy, to carry the negative stories and circumstances that Educators are aware some of their students and families face daily. This often times leads to vicarious trauma. This session will address what vicarious trauma is and that it is an expected occupational hazard of working in the helping field. By the end of the session, participants will have knowledge of symptoms and behaviors related to vicarious trauma as well as ways to transform it into something positive and healthy in order to improve one's overall wellbeing and stamina to maintain in the profession. The content of this presentation addresses the challenges of vicarious trauma for those that are directly involved with students and families, but also for those that are supporting and in leadership positions within the education system.

In this session, we will discuss the pros and cons of many styles of fidgets, discuss the purpose we are trying to achieve by providing fidgets, and give you suggestions for cheap/free tools you can easily provide to calm the crazy in your classroom environment. We aim to equip teachers with the ability to create fidgets to support students who need additional sensory input. Teachers will be able to understand why students might benefit from fidgets and how fidgets might actually reduce behaviors and classroom management concerns. Teachers will be equipped to evaluate the most appropriate fidgets for their own style and their students' needs. Teachers will have ideas for useful fidgets they can make at little to no expense.

Building A Classroom Community
Thursday July 18, 2024 1:10pm - 3:00pm CDT
This breakout session intends to provide teachers with fun and engaging behavior management tools that increase desired behaviors within the classroom. It will also give teachers ideas for building positive relationships between parent/teacher, and teacher/student. A focus in the classroom is building teacher credibility through respect and rapport among all parties in the student's education. These roles work hand in hand to create a positive learning/teaching environment for both the student and the teacher and give parents a sense of community within the classroom. In this session, we will discuss the importance of teacher relationships to students and parents, as well as the significance of parental involvement and how each of these things have a direct impact on classroom management. We will look at many ideas on how to develop and implement these things, and collaborate together to brainstorm more ideas that will foster an environment of trust, love, excitement and academic excellence.
